Pets, Parasites and People

HomeAgain Microchip
A microchip is a small electronic chip, about the size of a grain of rice, that is injected under the skin between the shoulder blades of your pet. Each chip has a unique number the transmits a signal to a hand held scanner. The chip is inert and does NOT send out any electric or radio waves until the scanner reads it. Every veterinary hospital, clinic, shelter and animal control officer has a scanner that will read all of the microchips on the market.
There are several companies that provide quality microchips and support. We have chosen to use HomeAgain products in our practice. When we insert the chip, our staff will assist you in completing the enrolement paperwork and we will send it to HomeAgain. Once enrolled, if your pet escapes your yard and the microship number identfied, a simple phone call to HomeAgain will get ou reunited. Very cool.

This is because the Renton Rotary (also a wonderful group!) meets at lunchtime. The Tulwila club meets for breakfast. There is no way Dr. N. can do a regular lunch meeting.

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO)
Have you ever heard of a football or basketball player "tear their ACL". They are referring to the anterior crucitate ligament within the knee. Dogs and cats have an ACL too, and they occasionally tear. The ACL's job is to prevent the knee from sliding fore and aft. This causes painful motion within the knee and contributes to arthritis formation.
Depending on the nature of the injury, the size of the pet, we may suggest one of several surgical options to repair.
One of the more complicated surgeries done at Cedar River Animal is the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, or TPLO. This web site has a very good explaination of the hows and whys of the proceedure.
